In Final Fantasy 14 (FFXIV), players can choose between 4 jobs in the Tank role:
- Dark Knight
All 4 jobs are great at taking damage and keeping enemies focused on the tank so their party members don’t get hurt. Tanking is FF14 is super easy, so it can get a little boring to play a tank because you’re mostly focused on ensuring enemies are focused on you and not your party members. As you run multiple dungeons or raids a day, the boredom will creep up on you. So you want a job that feels fun to play.

Are tanks fun to play in Final Fantasy 14?
Like most MMOs, tanks are focused on taking as much damage as possible so their party members don’t die. Honestly, we think tanks are the easiest role to play in the game. The abilities for tanks to generate enmity (i.e. hate) from enemies have been buffed so much that it’s almost impossible to lose enmity from an enemy after you hit them. Unlike World of Warcraft, once you hit an enemy as a tank, they’ll never stop attacking you. Tanking might seem daunting, but it’s so easy in the current state of FF14.
Tanks in FF14 all share the same characteristics. They have abilities that reduce damage taken for themselves and party members, self-healing, slowing enemies down, wide AoE attacks, damage buffs, and high damage potential.
This has led to tanks in FF14 becoming somewhat homogenized. They all mostly feel the same to play with little differences here and there. But we all know the real endgame in FF14 is fun and fashion.
Luckily, each tank job in FFXIV makes a strong case for why they’re fun to play. And yes, we do think the tank role in FF14 is fun to play. It’s the easiest role to play and it makes learning new content easier as you can tank hits and learn mechanics without the fear of wiping.
But which tank is the most fun? It’s Paladin. But other tanks have a case for why they’re the most fun to play.
Read on to see why each tank job has a case for being the most fun tank in FF14, and our verdict for the tank we think is the most fun to play.
Why Paladin is the most fun tank to play in FFXIV
Paladins are the closest to the holy knight/crusader aesthetic you’ve seen in western RPGs. Paladins use a sword as their weapon, and a shield helps them block attacks to reduce the damage they take by up to 25%. They also have decent healing capabilities to ensure their party members aren’t wiped out.
In keeping with the holy knight aesthetic, Paladins have a simple rotation that focuses on a melee phase and a magic phase. The magic phase has some of the Paladin’s strongest (and best-looking) abilities that deal lots of damage and offer self-healing so their healers can spend more time on DPSing.
The melee phase focuses on dealing damage with your sword to restore the MP used from the magic phase. Once the melee phase is done, the magic phase is ready again. It’s a simple rotation that doesn’t involve any complicated maneuvers or button mashing. It’s near impossible to mess up the Paladin’s damage rotation.
With the Endwalker expansion, Paladins gained a lot of self-healing to improve their survivability. Their magic phase lets Paladins heal through a lot of the damage they’ll be taking. If players are geared up properly and using the right defensive abilities like Holy Sheltron, your healers will spend much less time on healing you, allowing them to focus on attacking more and clearing content faster.
The best-looking abilities in FFXIV
We think Paladins have some of the coolest-looking moves in the game. Moves like Confiteor and the Blade of Valor spell combo are just some of the most beautiful moves we’ve ever seen.

Why Warrior is the most fun tank to play in FFXIV
Warriors are all about wielding a big axe to decimate your enemies. Instead of using a shield to block, Warriors focus on taking hits directly and mitigating the damage through damage reduction abilities and the best self-healing in FFXIV.
The best self-healing in the game
The Endwalker expansion saw Warriors turn into one of the best healers in FF14. We’re not kidding. Warriors have a move called Bloodwhetting which does the following:
- Reduces damage taken by 10%.
- Duration: 8s
- Additional Effect: Restores HP with each weaponskill successfully delivered
- Cure Potency: 400
- Additional Effect: Grants Stem the Flow
- Stem the Flow Effect: Reduces damage taken by 10%
- Duration: 4s
- Additional Effect: Grants Stem the Tide
- Stem the Tide Effect: Creates a barrier around self that absorbs damage equivalent to a heal of 400 potency
- Duration: 20s
Basically, Warriors heal themselves by dealing damage and putting up a shield to absord damage. It’s busted because no other tank has such a great move like this. With Bloodwhetting, one AoE attack is enough to heal a Warrior from near-death to full health. And this can be used multiple times. If used properly, a Warrior won’t even need to be healed from a Healer job during normal dungeon content.
Fell Cleave (and the Berserker fantasy)
It’s a bit of a meme in the FF14 community about how much Warriors love their ability, Fell Cleave. But we understand why Fell Cleave is so loved. It was one of the highest damage abilities in the entire game before Primal Rend came along. Plus, what’s cooler than using an axe to summon more axes to hit your enemies?
But the main reason that Warrior is fun to play is that it really lets you feel like you’re playing a Berserker from D&D. Warriors use a big-ass axe to control the battle and their focus on getting hit to deal more damage is just fun.
Why Dark Knight is the most fun tank to play in FFXIV
The Dark Knight uses a great sword to tank. They call upon the power of darkness to shield themselves and their party members. Their abilities focus on using the Blood Gauge so they can use their most powerful abilities.
We’ll get this out of the way first. If you’re a fan of the manga, Berserk and its protagonist Guts, the Dark Knight job is perfect for you. You wield a big sword and use the power of darkness to kill your enemies. Combined with the demonic-looking artifact gear, Dark Knight is the best job for anyone who wants to cosplay Guts.
The Blackest Night is one of the best defensive moves in the game
Dark Knights get access to a move called The Blackest Night which puts up a damage barrier based on 25% of the Dark Knight’s HP. It’s the strongest shield in the game and it has a very short cooldown of 7 seconds. This move can be spammed repeatedly, allowing Dark Knights to vastly mitigate the damage they take.
The job is edgy and cool
We’ve all had that phase where we were into being edgy and wanting to look as cool as possible. Dark Knight is one of the best fashion jobs in the game due to its aesthetic and gear.
Tell us these move names don’t appeal to your inner, edgy 14-year old self:
- Edge of Darkness
- Blood Weapon
- The Blackest Night
- Salt and Darkness

Why Gunbreaker is the most fun tank to play in FFXIV
Gunbreaker is the most recent tank job due to its introduction in the Shadowbringers expansion. The Gunbreaker takes inspiration from Squall in Final Fantasy 8 by using a weapon that’s a sword and also a gun.
Gunbreaker is basically a DPS job
It’s a bit of a meme in the FF14 community that the Gunbreaker is “3 DPS in a trench coat.” But it lives up to that meme. Of all the tanks in FF14, Gunbreaker deals the most damage (about 5% more on average compared to other tanks).
Gunbreaker has an active playstyle that requires you to make use of its Continuation move to use some of your stronger abilities. If you want to feel like you’re playing a DPS job, Gunbreaker is perfect.
Great defensive capabilities
Compared to the overpowered self-healing of Warriors and the powerful shield of the Dark Knight, Gunbreakers are more balanced with their defensive capabilities. While their self-healing isn’t as powerful as a Warrior, their Heart of Corundum ability offers some of the same self-healing and damage reduction.
Gunbreakers can apply a consistent shield with regen capabilities, so they have lots of survivability.
Verdict: The Most Fun Tank to play in FFXIV is…
We view Paladin as the most fun tank to play in FF14. Their defensive capabilities, holy knight aesthetic, and the most amazing-looking moves in the game make Paladin an absolute blast to play. Its glamour options are also great, so the fashion endgame is lots of fun too.
Ultimately, the most fun tank to play in FFXIV is going to depend on you. Take a chance to play through each tank job and see which one meshes best with your personal preferences.
