Before Crafting a Diamond Pickaxe
A pickaxe is a tool used to mine rock-based blocks and minerals in Minecraft. So if you ever decided to go on a mining adventure deep underground, especially in the recent Cave & Cliff update, bringing a pickaxe is crucial. Sometimes, you can use a pickaxe as a weapon to defend yourself since it has 5 attack damage (6 in Bedrock Edition).
With the crafting menu and recipe expanding throughout the updates, Minecraft currently has 6 tiers of pickaxe:
- Netherite Pickaxe
They require materials to craft, such as iron ingots, netherite ingots, and so on! Unless you’re fortunate to find diamonds in the first place, crafting a Diamond Pickaxe may take some time since you have to make progress from the beginning with a wooden pickaxe.
Step 1: Collect some Wood
This is the first item you will get in every single run of Minecraft. If you’re lucky to spawn in a Minecraft world within a forest biome, try to chop at least 1 oak tree to get 4-5x Oak Logs. If you spawn in the desert, try to run around and find yourself a tree. Any tree will work!
Once you have enough logs, press E to open your inventory. In this menu, you can find the crafting area in the top-right corner. Left-click to put the logs you just harvested into the 2×2 area. Then get 4x Wood Planks in the grid to the right and put it back in your inventory.
Depending on the wood you use, you can get different types of wooden planks. For example, Oak Log will give you Oak Planks; Spruce Log will give Spruce Planks, and so on!
Step 2: Crafting a Crafting Table
On the same menu, you put 4x of any wood planks into a 2×2 shape in the crafting area to craft 1x Crafting Table. Like before, remember to get the crafted item and place it in any slot of your hot bar.
Close the inventory GUI by pressing the Escape button or E again.
Then press the corresponding number that has the crafting table on your keyboard. If done correctly, the player will hold the table in his hand.
Look at any block on the ground and right-click the mouse. You’re now successfully placing the Crafting Table!
Step 3: Collect Stick
To craft Sticks, ensure that you still have at least 2 wooden planks remaining. Then press E. This time, place only 2 planks in a column shape to craft 4x Sticks.
If you spawn in the Jungle biome and have no wood left, you can try to find bamboo. It’s a tall green plant that grows across the jungle and can be used to craft Sticks. Using the same shape, 2x bamboo will yield 2x Sticks.
Witches are a hostile mob in Minecraft that will drop 0-6x Sticks on death. If you have a Looting III enchantment, you can get up to 15x Stick. So looking for Witches in the swamp biome or dark cave is also good!
If you’re in the desert biome, breaking the dead bushes will have a slight chance of giving you 0-2x wooden sticks. The exact amount can also apply to the Leaves block.
In addition, you can craft yourself a fishing rod and go fishing for Stick.
Step 4: Find Diamonds
Diamonds are a rare and shiny mineral in Minecraft that has many usages such as crafting tools, powerful armor, enchantment table, or use for flexing.
Usually, you can obtain diamonds in Minecraft by breaking diamond ores, which you can acquire by mining underground. The deeper you go, the higher chance you can find diamond ores. That said, the best layer to find diamond ores in Minecraft is -59y.
Each ore drops 1x Diamond on broken, so you will need to mine at least 3 ores to have enough material to craft a diamond pickaxe. If you have a Fortune III enchantment and are lucky, you can obtain 3 diamonds by breaking 1 diamond ore. And remember that you can only use an iron pickaxe to mine diamond ores!
Furthermore, you can find diamonds in treasure chests in many generated structures such as mineshafts, bastion remnants, temples, buried treasures, end city, nether fortress, stronghold, and villages. They contain from 1 diamond and up to 7 in a single chest if you’re lucky.
Besides all of the methods above, if somehow you have a diamond block, press E and put it in the crafting area to get 9x diamonds.
Step 5: Craft a Diamond Pickaxe
Now you have 2x Sticks and 3x Diamonds. Let’s go to your Crafting Table and right-click on it. You will see a new crafting area with a 3×3 grid, which means you can put more stuff in it.
Like other pickaxe recipes, you need to place 3x diamonds in the top row, followed by 2x sticks in the middle column. When you place the final item in the crafting grid, you will see a shiny diamond pickaxe appear on the result grid to the right!
Now that you know how to craft a Diamond Pickaxe in Minecraft. You can start mining some harder blocks like obsidian to craft yourself an enchanting table. And although it’s one of the most pickaxes with high durability, be careful when mining and save it so you can repair and enchant it later.

How Fast Is a Diamond Pickaxe?
Compared to an iron pickaxe, you can break blocks ~28% faster with a diamond pickaxe. Around 66% faster than a stone pickaxe and 120% more than a wooden pickaxe. A diamond pickaxe is roughly 11% slower than a netherite pickaxe. However, an efficiency V enchanted diamond pickaxe is faster and can instantly mine some blocks in the game. With 1562 durability, it’s considered that the diamond pickaxe is the second strongest pickaxe in the game!
What is The Best Way to Find Diamonds in Minecraft?
Besides mining at the correct y layer, there are a lot of criteria involving the finding speed of diamond ores in Minecraft. Since diamond ores’ exposure to the surface is reduced, cave mining is considered a slow way to mine diamonds. Instead, you should do strip-mining at the deepslate level.
To make it less time-consuming, a trapdoor will allow you to crawl through a one-block space. This way, you can go twice as fast; your diamond finding rate is doubled!
Can You Upgrade Iron Pickaxe to Diamond Pickaxe?
The smithing table in Minecraft is used to upgrade a diamond pickaxe to a netherite pickaxe. Generally, it only upgrades diamond tools and armors to the netherite version. Hopefully, Mojang will allow us to upgrade iron tools to diamonds in the future!
