First introduced in Generation 4 with the release of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, Garchomp has made a name for itself as one of the strongest Pokemon in existence. Garchomp is one of the few to be considered to be a Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon because of its high base stats (more on that later). Garchomp even returns in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (BDSP) as the final Pokemon in the Champion Cynthia’s team.
As one of the strongest Dragon and Ground-type Pokemon in the series, Garchomp has great natural resistances. It’s immune to Electric moves. Garchomp takes reduced damage from Fire, Poison, and Rock-type moves. These types are all prevalent in the endgame of the mainline Pokemon games and competitive play so it helps to be resistant to them.
Combined with its monstrous base HP, Attack, and Defense, Garchomp is one of the toughest Pokemon to fight in any game throughout the series. Garchomp can deal lots of damage while absorbing hits in return.
For reference, here are Garchomp’s base stats:
- HP: 108
- Attack: 130
- Defense: 95
- Special Attack: 80
- Special Defense: 85
- Speed: 102
- Total: 600
But every Pokemon has a weakness – including Garchomp.
What is Garchomp Weak Against?
As a dual Dragon and Ground-type Pokemon, Garchomp is weak to Ice, Dragon, and Fairy-type moves. Garchomp takes 4x damage from Ice-type moves and 2x damage from Dragon and Fairy-type moves.
Players can use Ice-type Pokemon like Abomasnow, Dragon-type Pokemon like Dialga, and Fairy-type Pokemon like Sylveon to heavily damage Garchomp. These Pokemon benefit from the 50% STAB bonus when using moves that match their type, so they’re a great option if you want to beat Garchomp quickly to tear through its high HP and prevent it from attacking. Ice-types work especially well because they can do 4x damage to Garchomp.
Weavile is a great counter to Garchomp if you need help beating Cynthia’s Garchomp in BDSP.
Pokemon that know Ice, Dragon, and Fairy-type moves like Ice Beam, Dragon Pulse, and Dazzling Gleam can also deal extra damage to Garchomp.
