During today’s State of Play, Square Enix revealed a new action-packed trailer for Final Fantasy 16 (FF16) . Check out the trailer and more information about the game below.
About Final Fantasy 16
Initially revealed in late 2020, Square has been quiet about Final Fantasy 16 for a while. Development of the game is being led by Square Enix’s Creative Business Unit III – which is led by famed Final Fantasy 14 producer, Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P).
The game’s plot sees players taking on the role of Clive Rosfield, a man on a quest for revenge after a tragic accident involving the Eikon, Ifrit. Eikons are the names for summons in FF16.
Gameplay details for FF16 are still sparse, but the trailer shows off a few glimpses of gameplay.
Like most modern Final Fantasy games, FF16 is going to use a real-time action combat system similar to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake. One thing to note is that development of the battle system is being led by Ryota Suzuki – the battle system director of Devil May Cry 5 and Dragon’s Dogma. Both games were lauded for their battle systems, so we’re optimistic about FF16’s battle system.
Based on the trailer, it looks like party-based combat as seen in most Final Fantasy games won’t be available. However, Square Enix has yet to comment on additional party members being available.
The trailer also prominently shows off Eikon (aka summons). The Eikons revealed so far include Phoenix, Shiva, Ifrit, Garuda, Titan, Odin, and Bahamut. All of these Eikons are summons seen throughout the Final Fantasy series and their new designs look absolutely gorgeous.
Just check out the design for Shiva below.
Based on the trailer, it looks like summons will feature prominently in gameplay. In the world of FF16, Eikons are controlled by humans called Dominas. In the trailer, some battles between Eikon are shown off – indicating players will directly control Eikons in grand summon battles.
